Common Chrome problems on Mac (and their fixes)

Mac battery draining fast

Chrome is known for its fast performance, which it gets by using your Mac’s CPU more than other browsers. But more CPU usage means more battery drain. If you use your laptop on the go, this can become a huge issue. What good is performance if your battery is completely drained and you can’t turn on your Mac?

If Mac battery life is important to you, then there’s a simple trick that should be a big help. Often there is a tab or an extension that is hogging your resources and burning through your battery life by itself.

Follow these steps to find the offending site or extension:

1. Open Chrome and choose Window in the top menu.
2. Click on Task Manager.
3. In Task Manager, click the Memory Footprint column to sort them.

Now you can determine what sites and extensions use up the most memory in Chrome. You can still visit one of these sites but maybe don’t leave it open in a tab anymore. Also, remember that even sites that aren’t memory hogs can still be a battery drain if you have a lot of tabs open.

Close resource-hungry and unnecessary tabs and the time you get from a battery charge should start to improve.

Chrome is running slow

Does Chrome on your Mac feel like browsing through a swamp? If browser responsiveness is slowing, it’s time to drain the swamp.

Why is Google Chrome so slow? We mentioned earlier that Chrome is resource-heavy, especially on your CPU. Chrome is fast when your Mac has the resources available, but when they are limited, and Chrome is demanding more than your Mac can give – swamp time.

The tip from the previous section will help a lot, but if you’re still experiencing slowness, there are other fixes you can turn to.

Let’s start by focusing on the cache. Chrome loves storing lots of your web browsing data. At first, it can help speed things along, but soon Chrome’s pockets are being weighed down by cache, particularly if your Mac is low on space or memory.

To manually delete your Chrome cache on Mac:

1. Open Chrome and choose Chrome in the top menu.
2. Select Clear Browsing Data.
3. Check the history, cache, cookies, and other types of browser data that you want to delete.
4. Click 'Clear data.'

Again, there’s another method for clearing out your cache, cookies, browser history, autofill form data, and a whole lot more. You can use the free version of CleanMyMac X. There’s surely no easier way to manage not just the cache that’s slowing down Chrome, but also your privacy and security — if these things are important to you (they should be).

To delete Chrome cache and other browsing data with CleanMyMac X:

1. Download the free edition of CleanMyMac X and launch the app.
2. Go to the Privacy tab and select Chrome.
3. Select what you want to clean.

“Chrome using significant energy” may be a sign of general memory overload on your computer. Try opening your Activity Monitor and check off a few memory consumers.

1. Open the Launchpad and type in Activity Monitor in the search bar.
2. Now, sort by Energy and use the [x] button to quit a process.

Disable background synchronization

There’s another setting that may help you out. Sadly, it’s buried too deep in Chrome’s Preferences but according to many users, it should greatly reduce energy consumption by Chrome.

1. Open Chrome and go to Settings (the 3-dot icon on in the top right corner).
2. Select Privacy and security > Site Settings.
3. Scroll down and click “Background sync.”
4. Use the slider to disable the background sync.

What does it do? It stops the websites from communicating with your Mac (even after you’ve left that site). Why was it enabled by default is a different question.

Chrome keeps freezing

Your browser is not just slow as a snail but keeps freezing? A spinning circle appears for a while? This is ordinary trouble with web browsers after continued use. And it may relate to the problem with the browser cache.

We've already told you how to remove the Chrome cache, so just go to the previous section and choose the way that works best for you: manual or easy one. Hopefully, this will help you to get rid of the spinning beach ball and fix the freezing issue.

Other ideas to try:

• Close all tabs
• Restore settings (Settings > Advanced > Reset settings)
• Log out from all your Google accounts and log in back again.
• Try browsing in an incognito window and see if that helps.
  
• Reinstall Chrome from scratch

Some services, like Dropbox, Alfred, and notably, Google Drive are constantly self-updating in the background. As in the previous step, you can use Activity Monitor and force-quit these processes.

Google Chrome is not responding

However, if your browser is not responding at all and you can't open the menu to clear the cache, browsing history, or delete extensions, try to force quit Chrome and then launch it again.

There are a few possible ways to force quit Google Chrome. Here is our comprehensive guide 'How to force quit Mac applications' that offers five different ways to deal with unresponsive apps. Pick your favorite one.

There are is a number of background plugins operating invisibly on every Mac. They could be various helpers, updaters, and everything else that supports the main application. For example, Chrome itself has an updater app that constantly communicates with the server. So, once again, go to your Activity Monitor and scan through your open processes. Try quitting anything Google-related there.

Another idea to try is to free up your RAM (random access memory) in the Terminal. This should unfreeze your Chrome, at least temporarily.

1. Open your Terminal app (you can find it via the Launchpad search).
2. Now, paste in sudo purge into the Terminal window.
3. Hit Enter

See if Chrome is feeling better now.

Google Chrome keeps crashing

Chrome freezing is one thing but crashing? That’s a much bigger issue as it’s a sign that something is broken. But what do we do with things that are broken around here? We fix them!

Probably the most common cause of crashes is a byproduct of one of Chrome’s strengths – its constant stream of exciting extensions. They make our browser experience more enjoyable and productive, but occasionally one of these extensions will be corrupted or introduce a bug that causes Chrome to crash.

Here’s what you should do to find a problematic Chrome extension.

1. Update your browser

Make sure Chrome is updated to the latest version. A new update could very well include the fix that will stop Chrome crashing.

2. Run a Safety check

The latest version of Google Chrome has a feature called Safety check. Go to Chrome Settings and select “Safety check” from the menu on the left. Press “Check now.” The browser will run a quick check to determine whether Google Chrome is up-to-date and protected from threats.

3. Turn off browser extensions

If that didn’t work or everything was already up-to-date, you can manually turn off your extensions and turn them back on, one at a time. This way, if the crashing goes away until a certain extension is turned back on – that’s when you’ve probably found the problem.

To manually disable and remove Chrome extensions:

• Open Chrome and go to Window > Extensions.
• Disable a few extensions or click Remove to completely delete them.
• Relaunch Chrome.

Spend some time using Chrome without extensions and then slowly turn each one back on until your crashing returns. When you think you have the culprit, simply click the Trash can next to that extension in Settings > Extensions.

An even easier way to manage your extensions is with CleanMyMac X. You get more control over all your extensions, even those from other browsers, and disabling and removing them is as easy as can be.

To disable Chrome extensions the simple way:

• Click on the Extensions tab in CleanMyMac.
• Click on Chrome Extensions and disable as you like.

Chrome won’t open

Here’s the list of hacks you can try if you want to repair Chrome. When Chrome won’t open, the easiest is to restart your Mac. But that could be a bit disruptive. So here you are, some alternatives:

• Press and hold Command + Q — this will quit Chrome.
• Press Option + Command + Esc — opens a Force Quit pane.
• Uninstall Chrome and download it again.

If that doesn’t help, there’s a possibility that the problem is Google folder permissions.

Web pages not loading in Chrome

“Aw snap!”

This is Chrome’s custom message for when a web page fails to load. If you get this cheeky little message or any other loading error, chances are you’re going to fail to see the funny side.

The reasons for Chrome not loading pages can be wide-ranging and hard to pinpoint, but we’ve collected a checklist of fixes for you to work through.

• Check your internet connection.
• Update Chrome.
• Restart your Mac.
• Remove Chrome extensions (for steps see 'Google Chrome keeps crashing' section).
• Disable or relaunch hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration is supposed to speed up your Chrome at the cost of your Mac's hardware resources. But quite often this feature crashes things.

If you’re still unable to load web pages, a reset or reinstall of Chrome may be needed. We cover that very fix in the next section.

Chrome update failed

Chrome won’t update? Some users have experienced the frustration of Chrome refusing to update on a Mac. The first step would just be patience, but if days have passed and you’re still not getting anywhere, a reset or reinstall of Chrome may be in order.

To reset Chrome manually:

• Launch Chrome and go to Preferences
• Scroll to the bottom and click on Advanced Settings.
• Scroll to the bottom and click on Reset Settings.
• Read the pop-up and Reset.
• Relaunch Chrome and try to update.

Note: Resetting Chrome will not remove your bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. A manual reset can be a bit scary, but as a workaround, you can use CleanMyMac X to reset Chrome without losing any data.

Reset Chrome with CleanMyMac X's free tool:

• Open CleanMyMac X
• Go to Uninstaller tab and find Google Chrome in the list
• Click Application Reset in the dropdown menu next to the Chrome icon.

If the browser is still not updating, download the latest installation file from the web and reinstall Chrome.

OS X :: Cannot Connect To FTP - No Login To Websites From Firefox

One day I could log in to any site using firefox, the next I couldn't log into anything. I type the password and username, when I click on 'log in' nothing happens. It says 'done' at the bottom left, but nothing has happened. Safari works fine. I would just get by, however after creating a website in IWeb I discovered anything FTP related will not work.
I have tried lots of different FTP clients such as (Transmit, cyber duck, firezilla, cross ftp) but nothing works. The passwords etc are all correct as they work on my mac at work. The only change I've made is installing little snitch, however nothing is restricted related with anything that would affect the current problem. I have tried usual suspects such as deleting cookie, erasing private data etc.

OS X :: Unable To Connect / Access Some Websites

I am new to Mac and have been struggling with this issue for the last week or so: there are a few websites I cannot access anymore (such as www.westpac.com.au, www.telstra.com.au, www.optus.com.au and a few others). As far as I can guess it is not:strictly *.au website related (or at least I think) because I can access some others *.au websites and some other in *.com or *.fr don't work either. I have this issue from both my iMac and my Macbook Air, on which I have set up no firewall or other specific filter. I am using a Belkin modem, on which I have desactivated the WiFi to use a TimeCapsule as a WiFi router. I get the same issue when I try to connect from Safari, Firefox or Chrome. I have exhausted all tips and tricks I have from the PC word.

I don't think I've got anything blocked as far as a firewall goes. I've tried connecting to mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html and mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html and it won't connect. Other sites work fine. I was going to do some homework on Google Docs, and the login page would not load! It would simply try to connect for a while, then time out.After some experimenting, I noticed this happened with all secure web pages (https://), and that non-secure websites (http://) loaded fine. I can't get my macbook air to connect to some website. Most are running fine but the few that dont work say that they cant connnect. I've cleared my cache and when I try to look them up on disk utility it comes up as 'Request time out'. yep can surf here, google and my own web but when i go to or ebay it just doesn't do it just says connecting to ... also cannot do my software updates. OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Connect To Sever Websites

I am running multiple services with the latest version of OS X 10.6 Server on my MacMini (web, mail, ichat, address book, etc.) . When I try to open my websites I get an 'unable to find sever message'. Everything has been working fine for the last 2 years and no changes have been made to the server settings, ISP, or DNS. All other services are working as they should. The server is hooked up to an Airport Extreme via a cable modem with a static IP. I have tried the following thus far:
1) restarted the server, airport extreme, and cable modem
2) checked the DNS via the web and my site addresses are pointing to my static IP address
3) turned Web services off and on again in Server Admin
4) checked the Airport port mapping to make sure Web Service (Port 80) was still open

OS X :: Certain Websites Won't Open?

I've recently been having some trouble accessing certain websites from my macbook.
What happens is that once I enter the address for the particular website in my address bar and press return/ enter, the browser attempts to load the website, but cannot seem to do so, as if it is being blocked in some way. After a minute or so of trying, I usually get the message 'Page Load Error' accompanied by 'Network Timeout' or 'Failed to open page' in Safari. Changing browser does not seem to work (same results with Camino, FF, Safari, and Opera), and using VMWare Fusion running XP, I get the same thing.
My setup is white C2D macbook, connecting wirelessly to an AEBS. I have another desktop, and 3 other laptops, as well as an iPod Touch and PS3 on the network and all of these can access the sites as normal. Just to let people know, I also changed to OpenDNS and flushed the DNS cache.
Could anyone shed some light on why this is happening? Alternatively anything else I should be looking to do (besides reinstall of OSX)?

OS X :: Can't Visit Certain Websites

For some reason my computer can't access a website. I just got accepted into a college and it won't let me access ANY of the website associated with that school. Also I just got denied to another website as well so now that makes it two!! I've heard of getting a virus that can change your hosts file which would make sense, but there's no way I have a virus. I visit these sites pretty frequently also. My roommate also can't get on the websites either from his computer, so I guess that would rule out the virus, and I'm guessing it would have to do with my router/IP. I've reset my Airport Express, tried using only ethernet and I still can't get to them. Anybody know what it could be? I desperately need to access the schools website!

Certain websites, including facebook and youtube, don't load properly. It looks like all of the information is there, but it's all just listed down the left-hand side of the page.
On my PC, these websites load and look normal, but on my mac they do not look normal when they load. I have tried opening the websites using both firefox and safari with the same results. I have also tried changing various settings on my preferences for each browser.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Connect To Internet - Using Wireless Modem To Connect To The Netgear Wgt624

I have a blackbook (intel core 2 duo) and I can connect to my landlord's wireless network (they have a netgear wgt624) but I can't actually use the web (Safari or Firefox will just 'think'). I've tested the diagnostics and it confirms that my mac can connect to the network, but it cannot connect to the internet. The network uses WPA personal and it has a 19-aphanumeric passphrase.

Software :: Will A Modern Mac Run All Websites?

I asked this question a long time ago, but I'm contemplating buying a new Mac (I may wait for Lion and get a new iMac then).
Anyway if you've seen my other posts you'll know I have an old iMac G5 with Panther which for various reasons I've only recently starting actually using. This means I have pretty old browsers and I can't help more recent versions. This has meant that lately both Safari and Firefox, which are updated as far I can for Panther, seem to crash if I try and go on anything but very simple websites.
I don't know if this is a fault with my iMac or just because it's such old software now (OSX and browsers alike) and so modern websites won't work - in much the same way as more and more websites won't work on my work PC, which still has IE6 and XP, because it's such an old browser (IT won't let us upgrade because some work-based stuff we use was designed to work with IE6!)
However, it has made me a bit cautious about getting a new Mac. I mainly want my Mac for websurfing which is a pretty light activity, BUT I do use chat-rooms, inbedded videos etc. etc. a lot. I know it's not Apple's fault but I really do want a machine where I can visit any website and use any feature.
Please be honest with me - do you have difficulty on any websites using a modern Mac with up to date OSX and browsers? Chat rooms, embedded video, shopping etc? If anyone is gay I'm specifically thinking of mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html chat rooms which can be awkward even on Windows. I really love the web and I don't want to be unable to use any site - even just a few not working would really annoy me, so I need to know if Mac is the right platform for me...

OS X :: OS X Won't Open Any Websites Properly?

I can't look at any website properly. Everything seems to be so messed up, even the Apple home page.

OS X :: No Images And Formatting Out On Certain Websites

I have recently moved my Mac Pro from my work to my home, and since moving I am experiencing problems with certain webpages. There are no images and the formatting of the pages are completely out. I am using Firefox and have tried Safari so thats not the problem. Windows and Pcs are fine threw the same wireless lan & internet connection.

OS X :: Email Address Does Not Appear On Websites

A lot of websites I go to and click on Contact us or email us nothing happens and therefore I cannot find the email address. I have found a Way around that is plug in my Mouse and right click properties and sometimes I get the email address. However this is annoying as happens alot. Yes pop up window is turned off so if pop up should work. Example of webpage below mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html. I click on there contacts email address and it just flashes but never see address. How can I see the email address?

OS X :: Can't Access Local Websites

I've created a few PHP websites on my mac mini before uploading them. I placed the website files in the 'Sites' folder of my user account and turned on 'Personal Web Sharing' in the Sharing preferences and could access them fine. All of a sudden, I can no longer access the sites through my web browser - I'm given the message that my browser cannot connect to the server. Any ideas why this might have suddenly started happening? I installed MySQL last week - would that affect it in any way?!

OS X :: Safari Hangs On Certain Websites

MacBook hangs on certain websites (yahoo mail, cbs sports, mens fraternity) but only from one of my wireless networks. PC works flawlessly on this situation and macbook works flawlessly on my first wireless router so the problem is tied to the interaction between my Macbook and the second wireless router. I've searched the forums and tried many fixes already that have been posted here or elsewhere: Reset Safari (it then allows me to reach yahoo mail once, hangs on every try thereafter). Go to Safari preferences and uncheck the box for warning of fraudulent sites (no change) Go to advanced settings and input DNS numbers from my ISP (this solved the problem for some websites but not others) try firefox (same problem as safari) software update everything (no help) install onyx (about to do that). network is a DSL modem connected to the first wireless router (DLINK N+). Second wireless router is linksys G (the problem child) and it is hardwire connected to first wireless router.

Mac Os X Web Pages Not Loading Screen

so I've had my MacBook for over a year, and I've never had any issues like this before. On my personal account, Safari, FireFox, Opera, and the like cannot access mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html, mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html(or any variation that leads to the same site), any other Google-based websites, my school's online gradebook, nor will it allow me to log into my Yahoo! account, though i can still search on yahoo. I can use the Google search bar at the top of my safari window just fine, but not mac-os-x-web-pages-not-loading.html, as mentioned before.
