After Microsoft announced to launch the Edge web browser to replace the IE in its latest Windows 10 OS. Most users clapped their hands to welcome the decision, as the Edge web browser proved to provide fast web surfing performance. In order to improve its performance to compete with rivals (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), the Edge browser stopped ActiveX plugin support.
On the other hand, the elimination of ActiveX support from the Edge browser dismayed many security suppliers that heavily relied on ActiveX plugin to develop their network security products. End users were also worried as their existing IP cameras couldn’t be accessible on Windows 10.
To fix this, some manufacturers redesigned their products. New products have a different firmware built-in that no longer uses ActiveX plugin, replaced it by using Adobe Flash player or QuickTime player, therefore the devices can be accessed and viewed through Safari, Chrome, Firefox etc other modern browsers.
If you own or use old IP cameras/DVRs/NVRs running with ActiveX plugin, you can contact the supplier to see whether the device has a new firmware to get the problem solved. Most likely, the manufacturer stopped the production, then stopped updating the firmware. If that’s the case, don’t be frustrated, because you still can access and config the camera on Windows 10. The solution is either using IE but enabled with Compatibility view mode, or Firefox/Chrome browser installed with IE tab plugin.
View in Internet Explorer
Although Edge doesn’t support ActiveX plugin, the Windows 10 still has included the IE browser. For instance, as long as your computer installed the required ActiveX plugin and uses the IE browser, you still can access the IP cameras, however, even though you can login, but camera’s web interface may not function as it should e.g. missing menus and buttons, or some images can’t be loaded.
To fix website display issues, you should enable the [Compatibility view] mode in IE (IE9, IE10, IE11).
Sometimes websites don't look like you expect them to—images might not appear, menus might be out of place, and text could be jumbled together. This might be caused by a compatibility problem between Internet Explorer and the site you're on. Sometimes this can be fixed by adding the site to your Compatibility View list.
For Windows 10 users, Open Internet Explorer, select the Tools button , and then select Compatibility View settings. Under Add this website, enter the URL of the site you want to add to the list, and then select Add.
For Windows 7 users, if you see Compatibility View button appears in the address bar, click it to display the site in Compatibility view.
View in Firefox/Chrome Browser
Instead of using Internet Explorer, you may want to use the Firefox/Chrome web browser. As default when viewing the IP cameras/DVRs/NVRs in Firefox/Chrome, likely it will encounter the same problem as the IE does. To fix this problem, you can install the IE Tab extension, this is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and SeaMonkey web browsers which allows users to view pages using the IE layout engine.
For Windows XP/7/10 users, open Mozilla Firefox and tap the Menu icon at the top-right corner to open the main menu. Then click the Add-ons icon to open up the Add-ons screen. On the Add-ons page, input “IE tab” to search the extension, click the 'Install Now' button, and then click 'Restart Now' button.
For Google Chrome, you can install the IE tab from the Chrome web store, once it’s installed, you should see the IE tab icon to the right of the chrome address bar. Open the your device’s IP address in Google chrome, and click on the IE tab icon to open the page with the IE rendering engine, that’s it.
